in addition to premium prices for all of their hardware. Cisco support will cost you as much as the unit.Ĭons: It's amazing Cisco insists on being so difficult to work with as they are always looking to charge for support and licenses, etc.

If you're not an IT pro you may be forced to hire a pro to install this appliance properly.

#CISCO ASA 5505 X SOFTWARE#

Setting up the unit via Cisco software can be a real PITA as noted by many other reviewers. This is not a useful operating philosophy for small to medium business looking for IT security. Cisco equipment is designed for professionals and as such Cisco assumes a lot and is anything but consumer friendly. The ASA 5505 offers a lot of security for a moderate price. Pros: The ASA 5505 is the successor to the PIX 500 series Cisco security appliances with additional features. Overall Review: This device has the potential to take over the world at a very small price. Although not really cons because you get what you pay for an I think its a deal already, but be aware of your restrictions 10 user, limited VLAN/VLAN capabilities, no dual ISPs, no failover etc. Oh yeah, 2 Power over Eth ports too! Theres probably more pros I'm forgetting because the list just goes on and on.Ĭons: I honestly can't think of any. Also, the CD does come with an 8.X version of the IOS as well as the updated asdm to go with it, not exactly sure which versions tho. Much better compared to PIX gui's at least. The GUI (aka asdm) provided is pretty configurable and can put decent config on there by default, and really only lacks complex features (SPAN is one I know of). I also think this is GREAT for those who don't know Cisco IOS.

I find it has alot of throughput, plus it supports SPAN, so you know its a quality switch. You not only get Firewall/VPN functionality, you get an 8, yes 8(!) port cisco switch for under $400. And what a deal!!! Look at the prices of a Cisco switches. I can't fathom what it would take to bring this puppy down. I've seen Linksys's, a Sonicwall, and even a standard PIX 501 all fold under the same load. Doesn't even break a sweat under extremely aggressive loads. I blew away the config 3x before I was happy with it. In all: have patience, want to learn and have plenty of time to "play" with it. The SDM was necessary to stop Internet ping replies because I saw no CLI commands to use to prevent it from just that interface. The VPN client will make your life worth living if you have a copy. (Cisco will only send it if you have purchased a separate support contract). Before the VPN would work I needed to get a copy of the Cisco VPN client.

#CISCO ASA 5505 X MANUAL#

I used the CLI for 95% of the setup after downloading the 1,000+ page user manual for the 7.2 IOS. Overall Review: I was brand new to CLI but eager to learn for my CCNA exam. Cisco will send the 3DES and AES encryption key quickly, which was their only help. These are free but you have to find them on the Internet. You will need to download two pieces of software (TFTP server software and SSH) to configure it. Don't try to use the VPN unless you have their VPN client already because they won't send it without a year's support contract. VLANs are easy to setup but only 2 are allowed with the basic license.Ĭons: Cisco support is non-existent without a separate contract. The customer is very happy to have employees login to only their workstations once connected to the network and split-tunneling is disabled to prevent viruses, etc. It's fast and secure after port scanning and using various Internet sites to perform penetration testing. I set it up for two VLANs and for VPN remote access. Pros: I set this up for a small business office of 3 users. If you complain of the lack of quantity of VLANs or ports, look at the cost of a full-sized switch. I have been wanting both a POE and a layer 3 switch - but the 1000 + cost was prohibitive. Cisco is not an entry-level device manufacturer. Prior knowledge of firewall, routing, and switch commands and rules are a plus. Overall Review: The CLI takes some getting used to. You would do well to gain an understanding of the CLI, layer 2 and 3, and firewall rules (permit, deny) before you set up and deploy. SonicWall, Firebox, and Foritinet may be easier for an non-tech person to set up, but do you WANT a newbie to set up your firewall? Cisco is not for the faint of heart or the plug and run.

I read quite a bit before I touched it, I read while performing each task.Ĭons: What? You get layer 3 switching, POE on a full featured small-to-medium business firewall. Best cost-per-feature device I have purchase in a long time. The GUI is perfect for monitoring and basic wizards installation. The CLI is about the same as a PIX, with added command structure for the routing and VLANs. I checked Google and went right to several Cisco infomation / instruction sheets. Configured VPN using the client wizard and a couple tweaks. Plugged in default to cable modem and I was up immediately.
